More Than Half of Americans Living Paycheck to Paycheck - Have Less Than $1,000 in Bank Account - In a recent survey, 56 percent of Americans said they have less than $1,000 in their checking and savings accounts combined, Forbes reports. Nearly a quarter (24.8 percent) have less than $100 to their name. Meanwhile, 38 percent said they would pay less than their full credit card balance this month, and 11 percent said they would make the minimum paymentâmeaning they would likely be mired in debt for years and pay more in interest than they originally borrowed. It paints a daunting picture of the average American coming out of the spend-heavy holiday season: steeped in credit card debt, living paycheck-to-paycheck, at serious risk of financial ruin if the slightest thing goes wrong. Campus Carry: Everybody's Unhappy: UT president announces his recommendations for implementing guns on campus - News - The Austin Chronicle - University of Texas at Austin President Gregory Fenves submitted to Chancellor William McRaven his policy recommendations to comply with state law under Senate Bill 11, which will allow concealed carry of handguns on public college campuses starting Aug. 1. While concealed guns will be banned in dorms, they will be allowed in classrooms, which has been the most contentious issue. "Under the law, I cannot adopt a policy that has the general effect of excluding licensed concealed handguns from campus," Fenves wrote in an email to the UT community. "I agree with the working group that a classroom exclusion would have this effect."Unlike public universities, private colleges have the option to opt out of campus carry, which almost all have done. Domestic violence is a horrible crime that touches most of the people atleast once in their lifetime in some way or form. Whether it is through loved ones, friends, extended family or through personal relatives. According to data released by Indian National Crime Records Bureau, about once every five minutes an incident of domestic violence is reported in India. The number of reported cases has gone up to 118,866 in 2013 alone (2014 data not available yet) an increase of 134% over 10 years, far out-stripping the rise in population over the same period.
This all occurs despite the fact that women in India are legally protected from domestic abuse under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005. This case is not alone in India, it has become a worldwide issue now.

Long Quest for Ebola Vaccine Slowed by Science, Ethics, Politics - At a time when malaria kills 600,000 people a year, tuberculosis kills 1.3 million, and AIDS 1.6 million, Ebola was a lower priority for many health officials.
"It's not like we suddenly woke up and thought, 'Oh my gosh, we should have something ready here,' " Collins said. If funding hadn't been slipping over the past decade, he said, "we would have been a year or two ahead of where we are, which would have made all the difference."
Now the effort to produce a vaccine, or a more effective treatment, has become a race against a virus that typically has killed 70 percent of its victims. The World Health Organization warned Tuesday that Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone could see as many as 10,000 new Ebola cases per week by year's end.
There are no approved vaccines or treatments, but some in development look promising.
Ebola vaccines are so effective in monkeys that macaques can be protected or rescued even if they're injected with a hundred times the lethal dose of the Ebola virus after vaccination. But no one knows for certain whether the vaccines will work in humans; the vaccines haven't yet been rigorously tested in people.
But if the vaccines and drugs fail in people, the world could be faced with the enduring casualties and mass fear that are the stuff of science fictionor history. From Supreeth

Collective Punishment in Gaza - The New Yorker - When you imprison 1.8 million people in a hundred and forty square miles, about a third of the area of New York City, with no control of borders, almost no access to the sea for fishermen, no real way in or out, and with drones buzzing overhead night and day
eventually, the ghetto will fight back. It was true in Soweto and Belfast, and it is true in Gaza. We might not like Hamas or some of its methods, but that is not the same as accepting the proposition that Palestinians should supinely accept the denial of their right to exist as a free people in their ancestral homeland. China's New Bachelor Class - Cool as glass, a young couple strolls into the Tiffany & Co. attached to Beijing's four-star Peninsula Hotel, elegantly lit with custom crystal chandeliers. She grips his elbow; he's aloof. Epitomizing urban affluence in today's China, this male likely drives a slick car, owns an even slicker high-rise and is more than willing to shell out for a Western-style tuxedo, wedding cake, live music, and, of course, a platinum Tiffany ring.
In other words: he's rich.
By contrast, millions of his fellow rural countrymen will likely never know such splendor or even the joy of matrimony. These young males are known as "bare branches," trees without leaves, involuntary bachelors demographically destined to a life without a wife or child. An estimated 40 to 50 million bare branches are scattered around the nation, and according to Quanbao Jiang and Jesús Sánchez-Barricarte, authors of the article "Bride Price in China: The Obstacle to 'Bare Branches' Seeking Marriage," they tend to be concentrated in rural or poverty-stricken areas.

The Cage Dogs of Hong Kong, by Brian Cassey | Amusing Planet - Hong Kong â home to some 7 million people - is acknowledged as one of the worldâs richest cities, with exorbitant luxury property and more Louis Vuitton shops than Paris. But tens of thousands of people in one of the most densely-populated urban districts in the world live in 6ft by 2ft wire cages â sometimes up to thirty in a small room. The cage dwellers are made up of the so-called âworking poor,â who cannot afford Hong Kongâs sky-high rents, the elderly who can no longer work and the mentally ill who slip through the welfare cracks. Hong Kong Chinese people actually refer to these unfortunates as âCage Dogsâ.Unscrupulous landlords charge them around US$200 a month for each cage, which are packed 20 to a room, and up to three levels high. The lower cages are more expensive because you can almost stand inside them, but the conditions are no less squalid. Occupants must share toilets and washing facilities, which are rudimentary. Many of the apartments have no kitchens, forcing their impoverished residents to spend there meagre incomes on takeaway food. The alternative is life on the street. From Nony
