A year into his School in the Cloud - Some critics find Sugata Mitra’s ideas around ‘minimally invasive education’ radical. What do you make of the controversy around Sugata’s philosophy? I think there is a tension between the rhetoric around his work and the work itself. Take for example the idea of self-organization, which is at the heart of the project. A great deal of organization of various kinds goes into making the work effective – so the question of what constitutes ‘self-organization’ depends on which part of the process you’re looking at. In some ways, Sugata is a provocateur. He strips educational processes down to something very simple and pure in order to challenge the way we do things. I think some of the opposition to his work doesn’t take account of the need for that provocation, and the context of it. I have worked with Sugata Mitra at NIIT, Delhi for a brief period it and was truly a great learning experience!

Why Support the Troops? - One of the most fascinating phenomena of our time is the extreme reverence that the American people have been taught to have for the military. Wherever you go -- airports, sports events, church -- there is a god-like worship of the military.
"Let us all stand and express our sincerest thanks to our troops for the wonderful service they perform for our country," declare the sports broadcasters.
"Let us pray for the troops, especially those in harm's way," church ministers exhort their parishioners.
"Let us give a big hand to our troops who are traveling with us today," exclaim airline officials.
Every time I see this reverence for the military being expressed, I wonder if people ever give any thought to what exactly the troops are doing. No one seems to ask that question. It just doesn't seem to matter. The assumption is that whatever the troops are doing, they are protecting our "rights and freedoms." As one sports broadcaster I recently heard put it, "We wouldn't be here playing this game if it weren't for the troops.
"There is at least one big problem with this phenomenon, however: The troops are engaged in actions that are harmful to the American people, including most of the people who have a reverential attitude toward them.

Bibleland Studios - Were Adam and Eve Giants? - In the beginning God created Adam and Eve. He created them in His likeness and image. I believe He created them tall, good-looking and extremely intelligent with the capacity to live forever. The world was nutrient rich and lush (which is why we have such enormous coal beds – formed from the lush, huge plant life before the flood). It was perfect and people were perfect so to speak. After the fall of man, they began to degenerate in size, intellect and lifespan. This is why the fossil record shows giant plant and animal life before the flood and the Bible says man’s lifespan was 900 years. If life on earth was larger (there were dragonflies with 29” wingspans) back then why could there not be giant humans? Today we live 70-80 years and the plant and animal life is smaller and we are smaller.

How Does the World Protect Itself from Israel / Zionism? - There are many people, "progressive" Zionists included, who loudly object to the Occupation in the Palestinian territories, but see no problem with the continued existence of an Israel that privileges Jews over all others who happen to live there, particularly the Muslim, Christian and other non-Jewish "citizens." These people are referred to by Zionists as the "Arab-Israelis," but they are, of course, Palestinians. This population also includes a small number of Jews, people whose residence in Palestine pre-dated the Zionist immigration that started in the late 19th century. Those among them – and they may constitute the majority – who never bought into the Zionist ideology and are opposed to the State of Israel are treated pretty much the same as the other Palestinians, as less than human, untermenschen. This may come as a surprise to many, but it is perfectly understandable when one realizes that the Zionist project, although initially proposed and marketed by Western Europeans, became in due course an entirely Ashkenazi endeavor dominated by Eastern Europeans, the kind of people despised by the highly educated, cosmopolitan Viennese Jews like Theodor Herzl.

Will endless wars save the dollar? - Capitalism and capitalists have no religion and no loyalty to anything or anyone except their personal financial interests. Profit margin is what drives them. Workers may not withdraw their labour in certain critical industries — health, food and so on — for fear of being branded as irresponsible but capitalists are free to move their capital wherever and whenever they want to maximize profits. This is what has happened to the US. When wages increased in the US, the corporate elites took their capital to other parts of the world where labour was cheap — Indonesia, Philippines, India, China and Mexico, for instance — to manufacture goods cheaply and sell them at exorbitant prices in the US. Walk into any Walmart store in the US and you will find 90 to 95 percent of goods are manufactured in China, Taiwan, Singapore or even India and Bangladesh. This may be the nirvana of globalization but it also means the US now lives in a virtual economy. Its real economy was shipped abroad when its manufacturing jobs disappeared under the rubric of globalization.

Did Radical Ronald Reagan Republicans Destroy Trust in Government? - Before 1965 it appears that the United States public trust in the government was quite a bit higher than it is today. As time has gone on the government has been less and less trusted for some reason. Many Democrats blame the Republicans. Further, they charge that it was the Ronald Reagan era that publicized the ineptness of government that started this downward spiral. But is that really the case?Did Radical Ronald Reagan Republics Destroy Trust in Government? Or did they merely point out the facts, call the emperor naked, and wake everyone up? And could it be said that the generation of the 1960s and all the antiwar protests did more to destroy the trust in government? This came well before Ronald Reagan.

Why Has John McCain Blocked Info on MIAs? - John McCain, who has risen to political prominence on his image as a Vietnam POW war hero, has, inexplicably, worked very hard to hide from the public stunning information about American prisoners in Vietnam who, unlike him, didn't return home. Throughout his Senate career, McCain has quietly sponsored and pushed into federal law a set of prohibitions that keep the most revealing information about these men buried as classified documents. How Much Did Rumsfeld Know? - TIME - Ricardo Sanchez, the commander of U.S. Forces in Iraq in 2003-2004, has written a new memoir, Wiser in Battle: A Soldier's Story, an account of his life and his service in Iraq. Sanchez was a three-star general — and the military's senior Hispanic officer — when he led U.S. forces in the first year of the war. He was relieved of his command by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in 2004 following the revelations of the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison. In 2005, Marine General Peter Pace, the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called him to say his career was over and he wouldn't get the promotion to a full general — four stars — that Sanchez says he was promised. Six months later, at Rumsfeld's request, he showed up at the Pentagon for a meeting with the defense secretary shortly before retiring. In this exclusive excerpt, Sanchez details what happened next:

Was I a good American in the time of George Bush? - Was I a good American? How good an American was I? Did I do what I could to resist the takeover of my country and the brutalisation of my fellow human beings? How much further could I have gone? Were the crimes of the Bush administration those that demand you give up your life and everyday commitments to throw yourself into maximum resistance? If not, then what were we waiting for? The questions have troubled me regularly these last five years, because I was one of the millions of American citizens who did not shut down Guantánamo Bay and stop the other atrocities of the administration.

Should President Bush Be Impeached? by Chuck Baldwin - There have been calls for the impeachment of President Bush from certain left-wing groups for years. For the most part, those calls have been correctly ignored. Some of the "Impeach Bush" crowd are still stinging from Bill Clinton's impeachment and yearn to see a Republican president impeached. Others have major policy differences with the President, and some are still angry at the possibility that Bush was prematurely granted the presidency by the Supreme Court in that "photo-finish" race with Al Gore.

Will the United States attack Iran? - STOCKHOLM: Will the United States use armed force against Iran? Hardly any foreign policy issue is hotter right now. American planes are reported to be patrolling along the border between Iraq and Iran, and U.S. forces have been authorized to kill Iranian agents in Iraq. Two U.S. aircraft carriers are in the Gulf and missile defenses have been installed in Gulf states. The military buildup is either to scare Tehran or to prepare for American attacks on Iran. Many remember that there was a U.S. military buildup in the Gulf during the autumn of 2002 and the first months of 2003 and that the U.S. attack on Iraq followed in March. Is something similar underway now?

Question for Neo-Con(s) - I, Popper, am now on the small island of Koh Samui, Thailand (thank you very much!). Have noticed throughout all the tourist areas here, and in Bangkok, that they sell these specific shirts. On one side it has a picture of Bush and the American flag, and on the other it has images of Hitler and the swastika, in what is a comparison. Underneath the two pictures it read something as "Equal War Criminals". This shirt is sold everywhere, and I've seen more than a few people (generally White families & tourists) wearing them. My question for Neo-Con(s) is, since this comparison of the beacon of Freedom and Democracy to pure Nazi fascism appears to have become so mainstream, does it make you proud? --Popper

Congress preparing to criminalize critics? - "In what sounds like a comedy sketch from Jon Stewart's Daily Show, but isn't, the U. S. Senate would impose criminal penalties, even jail time, on grassroots causes and citizens who criticize Congress," says Richard A. Viguerie, chairman of GrassrootsFreedom.comSection 220 of S. 1, the lobbying reform bill before the Senate, would require grassroots causes, even bloggers, who communicate to 500 or more members of the public on policy matters, to register and report quarterly to Congress, as lobbyists are required."Section 220 would amend existing lobbying reporting law by creating the most expansive intrusion on First Amendment rights ever," Viguerie said. For the first time in history, he stated, critics of Congress will need to register and report with Congress itself.

Why Don't People Have Urinals in Their Homes? - Public men's rooms have a mix of urinals and toilets, but private homes only have toilets. At first I thought it was simply a matter of space, but even when there's room for a second installation the second choice is always a bidet rather than a urinal. Urinals use less water than toilets. I don't imagine they'd be particularly expensive. My best thought was that it would have to take a lot of saved water to pay for a toilet, but I'm not sure that's the real explanation.

Bush to be impeached for the lies and deceit he used to launch an illegal war and for violating his oath of office to uphold the US Constitution. Millions of other Americans want Bush turned over to the war crimes tribunal at the Hague. The true fate that awaits Bush is psychiatric incarceration. The president of the United States is so deep into denial that he is no longer among the sane.Delusion still rules Bush three weeks after the American people repudiated him and his catastrophic war in elections that delivered both House and Senate to the Democrats in the hope that control over Congress would give the opposition party the strength to oppose the mad occupant of the White House.

Did they kill him so he wouldn't talk? - Nobody's going to morn the death of Al Zarqawi, me included, but there are some important questions about how and why he died that need asking. From the available reports on the incident, it seems clear that the U.S. knew exactly where he was, and had plenty of troops surrounding the building before they called in an airstrike and dropped (depending on the story) one or two 500-1b. bombs directly on him. It seems like they really wanted to kill him, not capture him. There is even a witness report that when they discovered he was not dead, his US captors beat him and made sure he died of his "wounds." Whether or not that report is correct, the bombing itself was certainly meant to kill him.

Why is Liberalism a Cult? - A cult is here defined as that which looks to anything other than the living Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, righteousness, satisfaction, fulfillment, revelation, wisdom, power, or solutions or that is of any spirit other than the Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit. Cults are often identified as organizations, but they really are spirits or ideas, and they infiltrate organizations and churches to varying degrees. You should also know that cults do not want to be identified as cults, and liberalism is no exception.

How Convenient! - The star witness in the trial of US troops for prisoner abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan has mysteriously disappeared. Omar al-Farouq would have been the first detainee to testify against an American soldier.
The US regime previously claimed that Omar al-Farouq was a "top al-Qaeda operative" and "one of Osama bin Laden´s top lieutenants", but now they claim that he was somehow able to escape. The only evidence of his escape is an anonymous "leak" to the mass media, as usual from an "unnamed" US official.
Three other witnesses are said to have "escaped" at the same time, so the only four people ever to succeed in an "escape" from a Guantanamo-bay-style maximum secitity US military prison all happen to be witnesses who wanted to testify against the US military.
There is sufficient anecdotal evidence here to justify asking the question: is the US military willing to eliminate people who threaten their position in occupied countries? Yet there is no hint of this obvious question in the western media. As previous examples demonstrate, the mass media would not be so restrained if the same incident happened in an enemy state.

So, we've got two opposing sides to this whole President Bush issue. We've heard so many people say "Bush is [great]". Okay...

I've tried Google for the phrase "Bush told the truth" and "Bush lied" (include the quotes) since that seems to be a topic thrown around here once in a while. There are far fewer results for "Bush told the truth" but even then a good deal of those include the word "suppose" prefixed to the phrase (or similar). I've even looked up "Bush is great" and most of the responses seem to indicate that he's great and botching grammar and cliches and "great" at "talking tough", etc.

Now, there's comparisons to Hitler (which is not new but gaining momentum) and in the past talks about corruption (even now), so, what makes him so great? (include url's for extra credit)

So I'm starting up a new company to handle all the "side-job" requests I get. Stew (an occasional poster on here) and I will be running the business. I've been working with Stew for about 8 years or so, he's a great guy and a great programmer.

Anyway. we have some of the more important stuff about the business worked out, clients, accounting, legal issues, etc. But we have a huge problem when it comes to coming up with a name for it!

Let me explain, here are my requirements for a name:

  • It has to be remembered, something short and catchy
  • It has to be able to be domain name accessible - we need a web presence, so we'll need at least part of the name to work with a domain name.
  • It can be strange
  • It can not involve animals that attack (spiders, wolves, lions, rats)
  • It can involve other animals, but animals are not a requirement
  • The best name Stew came up with tonight was Clitorotec
  • We need help!

So, if you have an idea, any idea, throw it out, I need ideas!

Oh, if you come up with a name we use, I'll throw you 2 email accounts, and a free sub-domain on codewolf.com with 30 MB of space, yours to use, for the rest of my life.
