Iran, responding to comments by senior U.S. officials, said Sunday any U.S. military attack on the country would be a strategic mistake and dismissed the U.S. remarks as "psychological warfare."

Iran is de facto ally. They know were not coming. The only one that doesn't get it is Seymour Hersh at the New Yorker.

Right ... that's why special forces have been going on missions into Iran ...

But what about their screams against the US when they, without desent, voted to start up a nuclear weapons program? That doesn't sound like an ally....

There was an interesting interview with a fellow from the Brookings Institution on NPR late last week. He made some very interesting points. First, he says that Iran has Pakistan to the east and Syria to the west - both countries which are very hostile toward Iraq. Now they have a US occupied and very unstable Iraq to the south with the US posturing aggressively toward them. Their securty situation is deteriorating rapidly. They've been working on a nuclear weapons program for years and they are accelerating their development. One can understand why they would do this. The Brookings fellow also stated that it is not in the US's best interest to invade Iraq. Rather, it is our best interest militarily, economically, and diplomatically to co-opt with Iran and make them a true ally in the region. Ditto on China. Both nations are vital to global trade balances and the US must work toward fostering healthy relationships with them so that they can have a seat at the table when deals are cut. This is certainly something to consider.
