I've read about this. I hate to be harsh, but if they're going to do that, I don't think they should get any aid. I mean, if they're going to act like children, they don't get any toys. But no one ever listens to me. Feh.

This is an isolated incident really. I usually don't care what people do where ever they happen to be.

However, by giving aid to people who are obviously more than happy to let people die is disgusting. By giving aid to them we are condoning that kind of behaviour. I'm sorry, but this is wrong. One of the reasons it's wrong is because India abolished the caste system years ago, so they can't legally deny these people aid. But it is tradition, and I suppose they do die hard. However, they need to adhere to their own rules, don't you think? I'm sorry, I'm just baffled that there are people that think it's ok to let people die. But if that's what floats your boat, fine. I think you can take respect for culture a bit to far. I mean, it would have been like aiding germany in the weimar era if they'd had an earthquake .. would it have been ok if they had taken our aid and not given any to the jews? By your rationale, that'd be just fine, because that's how their culture is. I say bullshit.

Again, I must add that the indian government has outlawed the caste system. So, is this descrimination still ok?

I had to look up the actual time period .. The caste system has been illegal in Indian since the inception of it's constitution nearly 50 years ago.

Here is a little article on the subject ... it appears as though it's a major problem over there:

I'm not sure how long the caste system has been in existance (1000+ years?), but it seems unlikely that it would forgotten/dismissed in such a relatively short period (50 years). YMMV.
