Top Five Lies

Everybody tells a white lie -- even a bald-faced one -- from time to time. But apparently a fair number do so on their job search.

Padding your resume is just plain dumb. I can spot a padded resume from a mile. Most go straight into the round file. Those that don't, may get called for an interview and that's where they get to bury themselves.

I have to say that I am creative with my resume, but I have never lied on it. I don't fall into any of these lie traps. But, I don't need to lie. I have 15 years of solid programming experience with great references to back it up from all my past managers. It's normal and expected to make what you seem a simple job look like an accomplishment, because it probably was, that's why they hired you. Sometimes what I find mundane is a great feat in other's eyes. I've found that a resume is really reviewed only for a minute or so, the interview is when you have the ability to really show what you know, how you interact under some pressure and how you can think on your feet. A resume should only be looked at as a brief history of employment, anyone that hires someone based on a resume is just plain stupid.
