Arizona: Apaches had Women Warriors - She was fluent in English and served as a go-between for the U.S. cavalry. She and Lozen were instrumental in the surrender in 1886 of Geronimo and his last free band of Apaches. For their troubles, both women were sent to prisons in Alabama and Florida. Lozen died of tuberculosis in prison in the 1890s. Dahteste survived many years in prison and died of old age on the Mescalero Apache Reservation.
