Peace Corps shouldn't hide job's dangers
- The rise in violence against volunteers is astounding -- a 125 percent increase from 1991 to 2002. The Lariat editorial board believes the Peace Corps has an obligation to make such vital information known before a volunteer commits to the program.
The father of Kevin Leveille, a volunteer who was beaten to death after his home was burglarized in the Ivory Coast, said he would have removed his son from the area had he known the dangers.
He also said he had no knowledge of the violence until after his son's death. His son's home apparently was burglarized three times before his death.
