Boot up Windows before you even log in - If you don't use any Windows XP login security, then you can skip this article. Otherwise, if you are like many Windows XP users who have to enter a password every time their computer sluggishly boots up, then read this!

Sluggish? Hell, I've got everything under the sun (and I mean that almost literally) installed on my computer and I'm 49 seconds from power on to desktop.

What is this sluggish you speak of?

Kill your prefetch files, fix any registry issues, trim down autostarts that try to load before the desktop is done loading, run bootvis and have it selectively defrag your startup files. Trim or kill any feature in bios that adds boot time. Set your hard drive (if IDE) to be the only hd on the cable and have it device 0 (master). Set a swap/paging file 1.5 times your ram and have it on a physically different hard drive. Run msconfig and identify any silent and useless startup programs. Check your system with autoruns (sysinternals program) periodically to make sure eveything's in order. Remove icons from the desktop (not the files, the display of icons) - it has to load a reference to each icon and each file/program they point to and that takes time. If you want to really push down startup time, change your network (if you have broadband) so that it's not DHCP and specify an ip address for your nic. Disable any network connections you're not using.

Oh, forgot, set your bios to boot directly to hard drive instead of looking for a floppy or cd boot - just dont' forget to change it back if you need to reinstall your OS.
