The Prison Industry in the United States: Big Business or a New Form of Slavery? - There are approximately 2 million inmates in state, federal and private prisons throughout the country. According to California Prison Focus, no other society in human history has imprisoned so many of its own citizens. The figures show that the United States has locked up more people than any other country: a half million more than China, which has a population five times greater than the U.S. Statistics reveal that the United States holds 25% of the worlds prison population, but only 5% of the worlds people. From less than 300,000 inmates in 1972, the jail population grew to 2 million by the year 2000. In 1990 it was one million. Ten years ago there were only five private prisons in the country, with a population of 2,000 inmates; now, there are 100, with 62,000 inmates. It is expected that by the coming decade, the number will hit 360,000, according to reports.

Economic Failure: 58 Percent Of The Jobs Being Created Are Low Paying Jobs - Are you good at flipping burgers , waiting tables or stocking shelves? Are you proficient with a cash register? Do you enjoy doing mindless work for very low pay? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you are probably going to fit in very well in the new U.S. economy. According to a report that has just been released by the National Employment Law Project, 58 percent of the jobs that have been created since the end of the recession have been low paying jobs. So exactly what is a low paying job? Well, the National Employment Law Project defines it as a job with an hourly wage between $7.69 and $13.83. But of course you can't pay a mortgage or support a family on $13.83 an hour. Even if you got full-time hours the entire year, you would make less than $28,000 on an annual basis. The federal poverty level for a family of five is $27,010. So needless to say, most of these new jobs are not paying enough to support a middle class lifestyle. This represents an economic failure on a fundamental level. Our economy is producing very few good jobs that enable people to be able to raise families and live the American Dream. The ranks of "the working poor" are exploding and the number of Americans that are dependent on the government is sitting at an all-time record. Sadly, if current trends continue things are going to get a lot worse.

Foxconn Looks To Duty-Free Indonesia For Cheap Labor, Customers - Because China now has wage which is too high.

Foxconn Technology Group's investment of up to $10 billion in Indonesia will allow the main supplier of Apple Inc to tap one of the cheapest labour forces in Asia and a duty-free zone of some 600 million consumers. Such cost savings could be vital for the mass producer, which relies on economies of scale to survive. Foxconn has seen rising wages and labour unrest at its main factories in China and has declared a strategy to diversify its production into other Asian markets.

History of union busting in the United States - The history of union busting in the United States dates back to the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century which produced a rapid expansion in factories and manufacturing capabilities. As workers moved away from farm work to factories, mines and other hard labor, they faced harsh working conditions such as long hours, low pay and health risks. Children and women worked in factories and generally received lower pay than men. The government did little to limit these injustices. Labor movements in the industrialized world developed that lobbied for better rights and safer conditions. Shaped by wars, depressions, government policies, judicial rulings, and global competition, the early years of the battleground between unions and management were adversarial and often identified with aggressive hostility. Contemporary opposition to trade unions known as union busting started in the 1940s and continues to present challenges to the labor movement. Union busting is a term used by labor organizations and trade unions to describe the activities that may be undertaken by employers, their proxies, workers and in certain instances states and governments usually triggered by events such as picketing, card check, organizing, and strike actions.[1] Labor legislation has changed the nature of union busting, as well as the organizing tactics that labor organizations commonly use.

Phony Facts - Anyone who is unemployed and has not looked for a job in the previous four weeks is dropped from the government's officially unemployed numbers and is moved into a third category -- "not in the labor force." Millions of discouraged workers unable to find a job are no longer counted as unemployed.
About 88 million people - a record high -- are designated as "not in the labor force." When the government eliminates workers from the "unemployed" category it can mathematically make the unemployment rate drop. Even if it hasn't.
The feds removed more than 1.25 million people from the "unemployed" category in just the month of January -- and presto -- the unemployment rate dropped.
A more accurate number is the unemployed, plus the underemployed and part-time workers. This figure is 15.1%.

Families Face Dire Straits After Online Poker Shutdown - On April 15, the government cracked down on online poker. To most, this simply marked the prohibition of an online pastime. But for a reported tens of thousands of Americans, the day the government indicted the three major U.S. poker Web site operators -- PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker -- on charges of bank fraud and money laundering was indeed an exceedingly bleak one.The crackdown stripped the players of their primary source of income. For players like Mogelefsky, a young father of two, it brought something still worse – the loss of his family's livelihood.

The Myth of 'American Exceptionalism' Implodes - everything changed. Real wages stopped rising, as US capitalists redirected their investments to produce and employ abroad, while replacing millions of workers in the US with computers. The US women's liberation moved millions of US adult women to seek paid employment. US capitalism no longer faced a shortage of labor. US employers took advantage of the changed situation: they stopped raising wages. When basic labor scarcity became labor excess, not only real wages, but eventually benefits, too, would stop rising. Over the last 30 years, the vast majority of US workers have, in fact, gotten poorer, when you sum up flat real wages, reduced benefits (pensions, medical insurance, etc), reduced public services and raised tax burdens. In economic terms, American "exceptionalism" began to die in the 1970s.

Not surprisingly, the U.S. Government uses a method that excludes millions of Americans seeking employment. This lower rate is used to prove that America’s economic system is superior to those in Europe. Their higher unemployment rates are blamed on unions and socialism, which guarantee workers health care and paid vacations. The implication is that while many American workers lack such benefits, at least they have jobs. This argument is faulty since unemployment is measured differently. In the USA, 35% of healthy Americans ages 16-64 are unemployed, but what does that word mean? Millions of women are unemployed as they choose to stay home to raise families. Nevertheless, 25% of healthy American men ages 16-64 are unemployed, yet the U.S. Government reports an unemployment rate of just 8.1%.[1]

Left-Wing Porn Companies Have Unsafe Working Conditions - Former adult film performer Shelly Lubben, founder of the Pink Cross Foundation, said she contracted herpes and became infected with the human papillomavirus, or HPV, while working in the industry and had to have half of her cervix removed. Pink Slip Nation by Gary North - I don't know when the term "pink slip" originated. The term is at least a century old. It refers to a "you're fired" notice. The American economy shows no signs of reversing its relentless increase in the rate of unemployment. Jobs are disappearing at a rate not seen since the 1981–82 recession.Companies continue to cut costs by laying off workers. This is the main source of the increase in corporate earnings – not increased output, but decreased output. How is this profitable? Because of increased output per surviving worker. In the midst of recession, businesses are learning how to cut costs. Labor in most businesses is the

US job cuts, foreclosures mount - This week brought new indications that any economic recovery in the US will not be shared by the working class. Telecommunications giant Verizon announced that it would eliminate 8,000 jobs by the end of the year, new data showed that the foreclosure crisis is continuing to mount, and weekly initial jobless benefit claims rose. What is emerging is a protracted period of extremely high unemployment and growing social misery, which will be used to further slash wages, increase productivity and lower the standard of living and social position of the working class.

Unemployed Hit the Road to Find Jobs - With the unemployment rate at 9.4%, some Americans are willing to go wherever they can to nab a job, even if it is temporary. To adapt, they find living quarters near the job in campers or cheap apartments, giving up normal family life for a paycheck, in a contemporary echo of the itinerants who roamed the country for work in the Great Depression......."There is this partial-mobility strategy" now, says demographer William Frey of the Brookings Institution, in which people are starting to move in a makeshift and impermanent fashion. He likens it to the way many Mexican workers come to the U.S. and leave their families behind......Researchers have long documented strains on families that are separated. A study last year by the Rand Corp. think tank found that in families with a member in the military, the spouse at home tended to have poorer mental health and report more behavioral and emotional difficulties among the children than in the general population. Workers who live away from home often say they know of the toll but endure it because they expect the dislocation to end when the recession does.

A survey of ageing populations: : Work till you drop | The Economist - HOW much golden leisure can you expect at the end of your working life? The OECD has calculated for how many years people in its member countries are now likely to be drawing their pensions, starting not from their official but their actual retirement age. It found that men could look forward to between 14 and 24 years in retirement and women between 21 and 28 (see chart 6). In many countries that was half as long again as in 1970, and in some of them twice as long. And the figures are probably an underestimate because they are based on life expectancy as it is now, not as it will be in future. Retirement has been overdone. The original idea was that people should enjoy a bit of a rest after a life at work, but nobody imagined that the rest would stretch to almost a quarter-century. Some countries have already raised their official retirement age; others are debating whether it still makes sense to have a specific retirement age at all. One widely touted idea is to phase in retirement over a number of years. It does not seem like a good idea for people to be working at full tilt one day and twiddling their thumbs the next.
