The Darkest Place on the Internet Isn’t Just for Criminals - This sounds nuts, yes? Makes us all seem like criminals? Except that even legitimate, nonshady organizations have migrated onto the Darknet to make sure their doings stay away from prying eyes. The New Yorker, for example—not exactly famous as a hive of evildoers—ran a Tor-hidden service built by the hacker Aaron Swartz and wired‘s investigations editor, Kevin Poulsen, so whistleblowers can securely leave documents or messages. (Tor is one of those pieces of encrypting software you need to access the Darknet in the first place.)

EU votes net neutrality into law, abolishes mobile roaming charges - Computerworld - Blocking and throttling Internet traffic will become illegal in the European Union following a parliamentary vote on Thursday.Members of the European Parliament voted to close loopholes in a proposed law that some believed would have created a two-tier Internet. The so-called Telecoms Package originally described "specialized services," which would have allowed ISPs to charge more for more data-intensive content services such as voice over IP and streaming video."After months of negotiations, the European Parliament has today adopted my proposal to close the last remaining loopholes in the text, in order to enshrine net neutrality in European law. Today's vote creates safeguards to ensure that players without deep pockets, such as start-ups, hospitals or universities, cannot be pushed out of the market as a result of deals between Internet service providers and content providers to offer faster services at a higher price," said Dutch Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake.

The Decline of Wikipedia: Even As More People Than Ever Rely on It, Fewer People Create It | MIT Technology Review - The sixth most widely used website in the world is not run anything like the others in the top 10. It is not operated by a sophisticated corporation but by a leaderless collection of volunteers who generally work under pseudonyms and habitually bicker with each other. It rarely tries new things in the hope of luring visitors; in fact, it has changed little in a decade. And yet every month 10 billion pages are viewed on the English version of Wikipedia alone. When a major news event takes place, such as the Boston Marathon bombings, complex, widely sourced entries spring up within hours and evolve by the minute. Because there is no other free information source like it, many online services rely on Wikipedia. Look something up on Google or ask Siri a question on your iPhone, and you’ll often get back tidbits of information pulled from the encyclopedia and delivered as straight-up facts.

Internet Users Demand Less Interactivity | The Onion - Tired of being bombarded with constant requests to share content on social media, bestow ratings, leave comments, and generally “join in on the discussion,” the nation’s Internet users demanded substantially less interactivity this week.Speaking with reporters, web users expressed a near unanimous desire to visit a website and simply look at it, for once, without having every aspect of the user interface tailored to a set of demographic information culled from their previous browsing history. In addition, citizens overwhelmingly voiced their wish for a straightforward one-way conduit of information, and specifically one that did not require any kind of participation on their part.

Random Shopper - I thought: what if I just wrote a program to buy stuff for me? The first iteration of this was going to be a program that bought me stuff that I probably would like. But then I decided that was too boring. How about I build something that buys me things completely at random? Something that just
fills my life with crap? How would these purchases make me feel? Would they actually be any less meaningful than the crap I buy myself on a regular basis anyway? So I built Amazon Random Shopper. Every time I run it, I give it a set budget, say $50. It grabs a random word from the Wordnik API, then runs an Amazon search based on that word. It then looks for every paperback book, CD, and DVD in the results list, and buys the first thing that’s under budget. If it found a CD for $10, then the new budget is $40, and it does another random word search and starts all over, continuing until it runs out of money, or it searches a set number of times.

Breaking: Newly Obtained Homeland Security Documents Reveal Radical Shift In Internet Policy - Brian McCarthy ran a website, channelsurfing.net, that linked to various sites where you could watch online streams of TV shows and sports networks. A couple months ago, the government seized his domain name and on Friday they arrested him and charged him with criminal copyright infringement -- punishable by five years in prison. We just obtained a copy of the complaint (below) that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made against him -- and they don't even allege that he made a copy of anything! Just that he ran what they call a "linking website" which linked to various sites with copyrighted material. Under that sort of thinking, everyone who's sent around a link to a copyrighted YouTube video is a criminal.

People use twitter in many ways, some as a newsfeed by following prominent people or networks, some as a pseudo-chatroom by limiting their followers and whom they follow to close friends and family, and some as a microblog for updating people about the work they are doing and their personal lives.

Google and Microsoft Cheat on Slow-Start. Should You? - I decided a couple of weeks ago that I wanted to build an app, most likely a web app. Being a premature optimizer by nature, my first order of business (after deciding I need to learn to draw) was to find the absolute fastest way to serve up a web page. The Google home page is the fastest-loading page I know of, so I thought a good place to start would be to figure out how they do it and then replicate their strategy. The full story of my search is below, but the short version is that to match Google's page load times you have to cheat on the tcp slow-start algorithm. It appears that stretching the parameters a little bit is fairly common, but Google and Microsoft push it a lot further than most. This may well be common knowledge in web development circles, but it was news to me.

Google's Inevitable Ruin Begins - You can see the beginnings of Google's ruin already, which was inevitable. Nobody can ever leave things alone even though they are working just fine. Someone always has to try to fix things when they're not broken. Once the process begins, it never ends, and it's begun at Google. The company has made minor tweaks now and then, no big deal. But the recent and more aggressive changes have been terrible. The biggest so far is the change in the way the company handles image search. I think it was drawn into the current stupidity because Bing and other search sites make the images page fancy with a little Ajax or JavaScript to jazz them up, as if users care. What users actually care about is speed, and none of these enhanced pages do much for that, especially the Google model.

The tests can detect traffic shaping in both upstream and downstream directions separately. The tests can also detect whether application flows are shaped based on their port numbers or their packets' payload. For more details on how Glasnost tests work, please read our NSDI 2010 paper. We configured our tests to be conservative when declaring the presence of shaping, i.e., passing our tests does not necessarily mean that there is no throttling occurring on your link.

We also made clear that these attacks and the surveillance they uncovered—combined with attempts over the last year to further limit free speech on the web in China including the persistent blocking of websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google Docs and Blogger—had led us to conclude that we could no longer continue censoring our results on Google.cn.

That Commentor On Your Blog May Be Working For Israel - Israeli students and demobilized soldiers get paid to pretend they are just regular folks and leave pro-Israel comments on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other sites. Of course,” says Shturman. “Our people will not say: ‘Hello, I am from the policy-explanation department of the Israeli Foreign Ministry and I want to tell you the following.’ Nor will they necessarily identify themselves as Israelis. They will speak as net-surfers and as citizens, and will write responses that will look personal but will be based on a prepared list of messages that the Foreign Ministry developed.”

FT.com / Comment / Analysis - Control, halt, delete - This week, an open letter appeared on Chinese blogs and online bulletin boards. “Hello, internet censorship institutions of the Chinese government,” it said. “We are the anonymous netizens. We hereby decide that from July 1 2009, we will start a full-scale global attack on all censorship systems you control.”.....Chinese internet users, although skilled at dodging the censors, are angrier than they have ever been. The anonymous declaration of war is just one sign of the strains emerging as the global spread of internet access, and its embrace by activists of all stripes, triggers an unprecedented crackdown by national governments that threatens to transform the way hundreds of millions of people communicate.

Big Business Is Aiding the Internet Crackdown in Iran and China -- Will the Technology Be Used on Americans Next? | Media and Technology | AlterNet - No legislation in the U.S. prevents the government from employing technology that monitors everything that goes through the Internet. Tools of mass communication that were once the province of governments and corporations now fit in your pocket. Cell phones can capture video and send it wirelessly to the Internet. People can send eyewitness accounts, photos and videos, with a few keystrokes, to thousands or even millions via social networking sites. As these technologies have developed, so too has the ability to monitor, filter, censor and block them. A Wall Street Journal report this week claimed that the "Iranian regime has developed, with the assistance of European telecommunications companies, one of the world's most sophisticated mechanisms for controlling and censoring the Internet, allowing it to examine the content of individual online communications on a massive scale." The article named Nokia Siemens Networks as the provider of equipment capable of "deep packet inspection." DPI, according to the Electronic Privacy Information Center, "enables Internet Service Providers to intercept virtually all of their customers' Internet activity, including Web surfing data, e-mail and peer-to-peer downloads."

Typing In an E-Mail Address, and Giving Up Your Friends%u2019 Too - NYTimes.com - I THOUGHT it was a little strange when I received separate e-mail messages from two people I knew only slightly asking me to click and see their photos on a social networking site called Tagged.I ignored them at first, but then thought maybe I should check it out. After all, I should keep up on what’s hot in the social networking world, right? This could be the new Twitter. That’s when I started doing everything wrong. I obligingly typed in my e-mail address and a password to see those photos. Well, the photos didn’t exist, but I had unwittingly given the site “permission” to go through my entire e-mail contact list and send a message to everyone, inviting them to see my “photos.”.......this is generally called contact scraping. Once you enter your credentials, like your user name or password, the company sweeps through your contact list and sends everyone an invitation to join the site.

Geocities: Lessons So Far - WHY? - The Geocities-is-going-away thing broke wide a short while ago. The Jason is Saving Geocities thing is breaking wider by the day, so I guess we need an update. After my initial call-out, a nice selection of folks showed up to the Archive Team IRC channel, ranging from the offering of bandwidth and disk space or simply moral support and coding. We've been downloading at an enormous rate, probably along the lines of a gigabyte a half-hour of Geocities, through all our different vectors. Because we're talking literally millions of files with an average size of 1 to 30 kilobytes, it becomes harder and harder to get a big picture view of everything we've grabbed, but the after 48 hours of work, Archive Team has saved over 200,000 Geocities sites. We're now pulling in new sites at the rate of something like 5 a second. Is that fast enough? We'll see, won't we.

Broadband stimulus passes, but many questions linger - Feinstein's amendment, however, would construe the statute to permit "reasonable network management practices such as deterring unlawful activity, including child pornography and copyright infringement." Neutrality proponents fear this would create a loophole that permits ISPs to use deep packet inspection to automatically block copyrighted content—but automatic filters are notoriously hard pressed to distinguish between simple copyright infringement and legally protected fair use. They also pose significant concerns about subscriber privacy.

What happens when old people go online. - The jokes are hilarious: "Elderly Woman Destroys Internet," and "Google Launches 'The Google' For Older Adults" from the Onion. On College Humor, there's a regular feature about the idiotic things that parents do with computers. (A sample: "My dad thinks that the faster you click on the go button on Internet Explorer, the faster the Web page will load.") Alas, the stereotype of the technologically clueless oldster is unfair. It's only those old folks who never go online who say things like: "Can't you look it up on the Google?" According to the Pew Internet and American Life project, over-65 Web users are just as proficient as the young though less adventurous in the kinds of things they do. Perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised. Old people have lots of free time, an unhealthy obsession with their bodies, and arcane hobbies. They're practically teenagers.
