Communist Media Attacks Norman Rockwell - Bottom line: it is politics, not really art that has Gopnik so upset at Norman Rockwell. And compared to what he considers good art, those velvet paintings that used to be sold at gas stations look like masterpieces.

Behind The Lens: Norman Rockwell's Photographers, A Mixed Picture - Who can forget the vulnerable childhood experience of going to the doctor? I remember sitting nervously on that white butcher paper, feeling like a particularly choice deli cut, and staring at a painting of a little boy pulling his pants down for a shot -- a foreboding image of what might be in store. That image, a Norman Rockwell illustration, stuck with me for years. And that's the nature of Rockwell's legacy: his work is everywhere, and has become an indelible part of American culture. So, as someone who looks at photos all day, imagine my shock when I saw a photograph of the exact doctor's office scene in that painting. From Nony

Andy Warhol Polaroids - There is a small gem of a show at Danziger Projects right now, featuring a little-known trove of Polaroids by Andy Warhol of famous athletes. They were commissioned by one collector in the late 1970s and early ’80s. The simplicity of Warhol’s method — straightforward portraits shot with the Big Shot camera — gives the tiny images (4 1/4″ x 3 3/8″) a purity and sincerity that belies the radiance and aura of greatness coming from the sitters. Even today, there is something tingle-inducing about seeing Muhammad Ali, Dorothy Hamill, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chris Evert, Pelé, Tom Seaver and Wayne Gretzky captured at the height of their youthfulness and fame. These portraits, made by the ultimate connoisseur of fame himself, have aged beautifully. The show is up through Dec. 12 at 534 West 24th Street. From cw

Aborigine Magic Paintings of Australia - This was a boys initiation site, our guide said, and the paintings under this rock illustrate some of the Ang-Gnarras most sacred, secret ceremonies. Allan, who was explaining the rock art to us, had to lie down on his back to point with his walking stick at the stylized human images, and we crouched low to see them. There was grotesque monster, a voluptuous female figure, and a man with a missing front tooth. Allan explained that these pictures told the story about circumcision rites. After an adolescent boy was circumcised, he had to live in isolation, not speaking to anyone nor touching anyone elses possessions, until his scar healed. Afterwards, he would be taken away by an older woman and taught about sexual intercourse. The rock picture of the monster showed the kind of horrible creature the boy would become if he violated sexual taboos. From Alter J. Ego

Jessica Rabbit Untooned - So this ended up taking quite a bit longer than the last 2 even though I had expected a pretty easy time with it. I was able to complete the face relatively quickly but the real challenge was everything from her neck down. Trying to piece together parts of a body from multiple photos on top of a highly disproportionate body was pretty difficult. I considered only doing the face but I predicted pitchforks and torches if I chose that route. Creating the sequins took a bit of time too. I recently saw some camera effects in a music video I tried to duplicate too with the streaked brightness which I gave a shot here to add to the whole realism. From cw

Cool X-ray Art by Nick Veasey - For Nick Veasey, artistic inspiration came from an unlikely source. While working as a photographer/designer for morning television in England, he was assigned the monotonous task of X-raying soda cans to determine which ones contained a winning code for a contest sponsored by Pepsi. After three days without a winner, he X-rayed his sneaker for kicks. Veasey recalls, “It was a great image and I thought ‘there’s something to this.’ It was one of those life-changing experiences. I just left behind everything else I was doing.”Veasey spent the next three months working with scientists to refine his technique. He learned to gauge object density and structure by experimenting with a variety of materials including plastic, flowers, metals and people, taking the utmost care with his living subjects. Masturbating artist slammed - AN ARTIST has created a new exhibition of drawings by masturbating over paper.Controversial performance artist Jordan McKenzie, 40, has made 55 images by ejaculating over canvas and sprinkling carbon over the results to immortalise them. The results of his labour entitled Spent are to go on display at the Centre for Recent Drawing in Highbury, north London, for a month. But Father Kit Cunningham, of St Etheldredas Church in Clerkenwell, said: “All we can do is pray for the artist.”The clergyman, based at the oldest Roman Catholic church in London, stressed: “The extraordinary thing is that someone actually thought it was art and put it on at his gallery.“We are clearly dealing with a very mixed-up person. The Super-Realist Sculptures of Duane Hanson - Duane Hanson was born in 1925 in small city in Minnesota. He received his BA at Macalester College in Minnesota and his MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. As he was in school and later professing abroad, he began sculpting in an eerily real style. While teaching in Munich, Germany, he came into contact with the philosophy of the Post Expressionists. He would lated be considered to be a Verist, a movement of Post Expressionism who, as described by the art historian Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub, “… tear the objective form of the world of contemporary facts and represent current experience in its tempo and fevered temperature.” As such, his focus turned to creating accurate, surreal recreations of regular people. Duane Hanson died on January 6th, 1996. From cw

President in the Flesh: 'Porn Bush' Angers Republicans - Artist Jonathen Yeo has created a collage portrait of US President George W. Bush by cutting up porn magazines. The Bush portrait, currently on display in London, has attracted the wrath of Republicans. British artist Jonathan Yeo had every reason to be offended. The Bush Library in Texas had yet again rescinded a commission it had given him to paint a portrait of United States President George W. Bush. In the end, though, the artist decided to go ahead with his artistic portrayal of the 43rd president, even if he wasn't getting paid for it -- and created a portrait of Bush using a collage of pornographic images.
