Irradiated Software - Cinch - Cinch gives you simple, mouse-driven window management by defining the left, right, and top edges of your screen as 'hot zones'. Drag a window until the mouse cursor enters one of these zones then drop the window to have it cinch into place. Cinching to the left or right edges of the screen will resize the window to fill exactly half the screen, allowing you to easily compare two windows side-by-side (splitscreen). Cinching to the top edge of the screen will resize the window to fill the entire screen (fullscreen). Dragging a window away from its cinched position will restore the window to its original size.

Security Fix - Microsoft Update Quietly Installs Firefox Extension - PERHAPS THIS SHOULD GO UNDER 'CROOKS' F-ING MICROSOFT!!!! A routine security update for a Microsoft Windows component installed on tens of millions of computers has quietly installed an extra add-on for an untold number of users surfing the Web with Mozilla's Firefox Web browser. Annoyances.org, which lists various aspects of Windows that are, well, annoying, says "this update adds to Firefox one of the most dangerous vulnerabilities present in all versions of Internet Explorer: the ability for Web sites to easily and quietly install software on your PC." I'm not sure I'd put things in quite such dire terms, but I'm fairly confident that a decent number of Firefox for Windows users are rabidly anti-Internet Explorer, and would take umbrage at the very notion of Redmond monkeying with the browser in any way. Big deal, you say? I can just uninstall the add-on via Firefox's handy Add-ons interface, right? Not so fast. The trouble is, Microsoft has disabled the "uninstall" button on the extension. What's more, Microsoft tells us that the only way to get rid of this thing is to modify the Windows registry, an exercise that -- if done imprecisely -- can cause Windows systems to fail to boot up.

Annoyances.org - Remove the Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant (ClickOnce) Firefox Extension - The Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 update, pushed through the Windows Update service to all recent editions of Windows in February 2009, installs the Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant firefox extension without asking your permission.This update adds to Firefox one of the most dangerous vulnerabilities present in all versions of Internet Explorer: the ability for websites to easily and quietly install software on your PC. Since this design flaw is one of the reasons you may've originally choosen to abandon IE in favor of a safer browser like Firefox, you may wish to remove this extension with all due haste.Unfortunately, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom has taken steps to make the removal of this extension particularly difficult - open the Add-ons window in Firefox, and you'll notice the Uninstall button next to their extension is grayed out! Their reasoning, according to Microsoft blogger Brad Abrams, is that the extension needed "support at the machine level in order to enable the feature for all users on the machine," which, of course, is precisely the reason this add-on is bad news for all Firefox users.

Wolfram|Alpha - So that new "computational knowledge engine" Wolfram Alpha is now available. It's slower than molasses -- not too surprising, since everyone want to give it a try. Amazingly, all of the search output is in graphics files. Yes, all text is rendered as a graphic, so it's impossible to copy and paste it. Maybe that's why it's so damn slow. What's up with that? Are they trying to invent an un-copyable site? There's an option to create a PDF file of the results -- but that doesn't seem to be working so I don't know if that will also be uncopyable graphical text.

Fatal mistake? Microsoft's cavalier disregard for its customers - When Computerworld reporter Gregg Keizer broke the story over the weekend that Microsoft had a 19-hour server outage that caused the WGA validation of many Windows Vista and XP users to fail, resulting in WGA Notifications accusing them software piracy, I frankly thought little of it. It was just one more example of the erosion of the user experience for honest paying customers that Microsoft appears to be cavalier about. It was a spit in the bucket. Microsoft confirms Vista OEM hack - n response to widespread chatter on blogs and forums, Microsoft has acknowledged the presence of hacks that may allow pirates to bypass the product activation security feature in its Windows Vista operating system. According to a post by Microsoft Senior Product Manager Alex Kochis on the Windows Genuine Advantage developers' blog, Microsoft has identified two ways in which hackers have broken the product activation security feature on original equipment manufacturer PCs that come bundled with Vista.

Death by DMCA - In 1998, U.S. entertainment companies persuaded Congress to make dramatic changes in its copyright code by passing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA gave copyright holders new rights to control the way people use copyrighted material and new protection for technologies designed to restrict access or copying. The movie and record companies argued they needed these new restrictions to fight increased piracy threats in the digital era. If three or four years ago you didn't buy a digital video recorder that automatically skips commercials, you're out of luck; that feature is not in such products today. It features windows, applications, and the thing that makes it really stand out is, it allows anyone to develop applications in php IN the OS. All you have to do to make an application is to click the Create a New App link, name it, write a few lines of code, give it window dimensions, and you’re done! The application will become available to anyone. You can also edit/delete it later. For example we created a simple web browser (only a few lines of code), a calculator, added a premade chat system, and a few other simple things. If you know what you want and are tired of telling your PC the same things over and over, use PTFB (short for "Push the Freakin' Button"), a button-pressing utility.
